Plain answers

What a private holdings and advisory group actually does.

The questions founders, families, and boards most often ask before a first conversation — answered plainly. If something here isn’t covered, we’re happy to talk it through directly.

Ivythorn is a UK-based private holdings and advisory group. It does three things, often for the same client over many years:

It acquires and holds significant stakes in established businesses through its holding company activity; it provides patient growth and venture capital to companies ready to scale; and it advises founders, families, and boards on capital, acquisitions, and succession. It also actively stewards the businesses within its group of companies.

Yes — private holdings are a core part of what we do. As a holding company, Ivythorn acquires and owns significant stakes in established businesses and holds them long term, from its own permanent balance sheet rather than a fund with a fixed life.

We also operate as an advisory firm, so the two activities sit alongside each other under one group. Today’s advisor is often tomorrow’s shareholder.

Through private holdings, we become an owner — taking equity in a business and sharing in its long-term growth.

Through advisory, we provide independent counsel on decisions such as raising capital, buying or selling, or planning succession, without taking ownership. Advisory is paid for advice and is not tied to a transaction fee — which means the advice can honestly be “do not do the deal” when that’s the right answer.

We concentrate on established, profitable businesses with a defensible position in their market, a strong leadership team and culture, clean finances, and founders who want a long-horizon partner rather than a quick exit.

We gravitate toward operational and technical services, property and real assets, established small and medium-sized businesses, family-owned companies, and growth-stage firms. We’re industry-agnostic in principle, but honest about where we add the most.

Indefinitely, in principle. Because we invest permanent capital from our own balance sheet rather than a fund with a fixed lifecycle, there’s no obligation to exit on a timetable. We measure holding periods in decades, not quarters, and we hold for as long as the business is compounding and the partnership is working.

Both. We’re comfortable as a significant minority partner or as the majority owner, depending on what the business needs and what the founder wants. Either way, we structure terms to keep the people who built the company aligned and in control of what matters to them.

We’re industry-agnostic in principle but concentrate where we have operational experience: operational and technical services, property and real assets, established SMBs, family-owned companies, growth-stage companies, and B2B services.

Our group company, European Technical, gives us first-hand knowledge of property and technical services in the UAE — a sector we know from the inside, not just from a term sheet.

Private equity typically raises funds with fixed lifecycles, uses significant leverage, and works toward a defined exit on a short timetable.

Ivythorn is different on each count: we use permanent capital, lighter financial structures, and no exit deadline, and we act as operators through our group of companies rather than only as financial owners. Our returns come from growth, not from leverage or fees stacked against the business.

We advise founders, families, and boards of established businesses. Typical engagements cover capital structure and fundraising strategy, buy-side and sell-side mergers and acquisitions, family succession and ownership transitions, and independent board-level guidance on strategy and governance.

European Technical is Ivythorn’s UAE operating company for property and technical services. It’s part of the Ivythorn group of companies, and it gives the group a genuine operating presence in the United Arab Emirates — plus first-hand knowledge of the technical and property services sector.

Ivythorn is headquartered in the United Kingdom, in London, and works across the United Kingdom, Europe, and the Middle East. Our operating presence in the United Arab Emirates is anchored by European Technical.
